BUILDING
A HERITAGE

1952

George Neven immigrated to Canada in 1951 from Holland after World War 2 in search of a better future for his family. He was skilled with his hands and was very quickly trusted with building decks, doing more minor renovations, and odd home maintenance jobs. Unaware of the impact he would have in the home construction industry, George Neven decided to start his own business. In 1952, Neven Construction Ltd. was formed.

1967

George Neven ran the company for 15 years, keeping things small and focusing on high-quality work. When George retired in 1967, his son Andrew took over the business, becoming the company’s second president. With his self-taught skills in drafting and home design, Andrew started building more new homes while continuing to take on renovations and additions.

1990

After graduating from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Commerce, Gary Neven joined the family business full-time and became the third generation of Neven Construction. Gary’s focus on drafting and design helped elevate the business’s design capabilities.

1996

Andrew Neven retires from Neven Construction Ltd. and goes on to other business ventures.

Gary Neven became President and rebranded the company to Neven Custom Homes Ltd, which more closely describes the type of work that makes up most of the business.

Gary has grown the business slowly and steadily, taking a hands-on approach and working on-site most days as a certified Red Seal carpenter. Gary is ahead of his time, designing and drafting on CAD by the mid-90s.

2008-2015

Mark Neven started doing the company books in high school, learning from Joanne Neven, who faithfully did the books for George, Andrew & Gary.
In 2016, Gary’s son, Mark Neven, officially joined the company, becoming the fourth generation to work in the family business. Having worked in the Heavy Civil industry on some major projects, including the Milton Velodrome and Eglington Crosstown LRT, Mark brings a fresh set of eyes to the business and helps put systems in place for future growth.

2015 - Present

Today, Gary Neven and his son Mark continue to follow the business approach of their forefathers, Andrew and George, focusing on exceptional quality in the local market. Gary offers outstanding value in design and fosters a one-on-one relationship with each client. Mark contributes immensely to the business’s day-to-day operations, growth and development. Their religious and family values are evident in their everyday dealings with customers and employees. The heritage of the Neven business is precious to both the Neven team and their clients. They have received renovation work in heritage homes that their forefathers built several times—a testament to the business and the high standard of work delivered over the years.

Neven Custom Homes’ long-term success lies in its chosen niche as a leader in custom-designed homes and renovation work that many builders consider too complex or time-consuming.

Honesty is our foundation—without it, nothing else matters. We commit to transparency in all our dealings, recognizing our clients’ significant investment in building a custom home. We treat our clients’ funds with the utmost care, keep our promises, and own our mistakes openly. Embracing humility, we acknowledge that we don’t have all the answers and remain open to others’ new ideas and methods.

Ensuring everyone’s safety is our top priority. We follow regulations rigorously and stay proactive with safety measures, including using aerial work platforms and installing temporary stairs and railings during framing. Regular training sessions and toolbox talks reinforce safety protocols, while ongoing education ensures all team members are equipped for the job. Our commitment? No task is assigned without our willingness to do it ourselves.

LEADERSHIP

Gary neven

Originally planning to become an accountant, Gary graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from McMaster University in 1990. Realizing a desk job wasn’t his calling, he joined the family business that year and started a carpentry apprenticeship, achieving his Red Seal certificate in 1993. With his combined business education and hands-on carpentry skills, Gary was well-equipped to grow the company and personally design many of the homes he built.

Gary lives in Ancaster with his wife, Brenda, and enjoys fishing, vacationing in Florida, and spending time with his five grandchildren.
